Our team is needed because we want to try to solve the problem of the high usage of drugs on campus and in our community. This relates to the impact area of Health and Wellness because students in our school are not fully aware of the numerous health effects in the long and short term that drugs can cause. By bringing awareness and offering ways to cope with drug use, students will be able make better decisions that will positively impact their learning outcomes.
Our Research Shows: -Drugs impede student’s academic progress.Drug abuse can be devastating to a person’s health and academic performance. Getting intoxicated can have a negagtive impact on cognitive functions. -Marijuana suppresses neuronal activity in the hippocampus, resulting in problems with attention, memory, and concentration.Marijuana also impacts motivation following marijuana use due to the effect of THC in the body blocking the passage of nutrients through cells, the neuronal suppression in the hippocampus , or the decrease in energy accompanying the fatigue that follows night time use. -Nationwide study of deadly crashes found that 36.9% of drivers who tested for drugs have used marijuana before getting in their car. Marijuana affects skills required for safe driving such as being alert and concentrated. These same skills are needed to learn. -The use of drugs doubles the risk of developing symptoms of depression and anxiety.
